Swalecliffe Chalets Open House Weekend
October 17th, 2006
The Swalecliffe Chalets Conservation Association (aka SCOA) are holding a CHALET OPEN HOUSE WEEKEND this weekend to let the people of Herne Bay, Whitstable & environs stroll along the front between Tankerton & Hampton, pop in & see us, have a chat & a cuppa & view our chalets.
As you may have heard, the chalets are threatened with demolition to enable to site owners, Cinque Posts, to replace them with large, brown caravans, creating an army or prison camp scenario - totally out of keeping with this wonderful North Kent stretch of coastline.
We need the local people to back our campaign to retain the chalets, thus conserving a quintessential part of our English Heritage.

AGENDA
'The Way Forward'
Casino application dropped
September 27th, 2006
Canterbury City Council decided not to progress with the idea after public consultation showed 75% of respondents were against the idea.
The Canterbury district, which covers Herne Bay and Whitstable, was in the running for a large or small casino.
Dartford Borough Council also voted unanimously in August to halt its attempts to get a casino.
The decision not to proceed in Canterbury was made by the full council after it received a recommendation from the licensing committee.
Problem gambling
Councillor John Gilbey, portfolio holder for regeneration, said: "I think we could have done some good [with a casino] but some of the bad elements far outweigh the good."
Mr Gilbey said the 2,700 replies to the public consultation, with the majority rejecting the casino proposal, was "an overwhelming response".
Many people felt the impact of problem gambling was too great when considered alongside any potential economic boost.
The government's Casino Advisory Panel is set to make recommendations by the end of the year on sites for one regional "super-casino", eight large ones and eight small ones.

Silver for Herne Bay in Bloom
September 16th, 2006
Herne Bay's beautiful blooms and community gardening projects won a silver award at the Southeast in Bloom awards held in Chichester last week.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The judges, who toured the town in July, were impressed with what was on offer for residents and visitors. They particularly liked the seafront bedding and displays at the Bandstand, the planters at Herne Bay railway station installed by the Saxon Community Group and the planters made from recycled wood at Briary School.
Other high spots were the raised flower beds in Mortimer Street, the talking litter bins on the seafront, the volunteer work at Broomfield and Curtis Wood ponds and the level of sponsorship achieved during the campaign.
However, despite the praise and the award of a silver prize, Herne Bay was just pipped to the post by Bognor Regis, who won the coastal resort section with silver gilt.
The judges also gave useful advice on areas to improve on for next year. These include visiting the winners of the best private front garden and commercial premises in the gardening competition, getting more voluntary groups involved and focusing more on water conservation.
Executive member for leisure, Cllr Gillian Reuby, said the feedback would be very helpful as the city council plans next year’s entry.
She added: “We were very pleased that the judges made so many positive comments about the town, and this reflects all the hard work put in by the local community. I’d like to thank everybody who played their part. There is plenty more we can do next year, and we’re already looking forward to putting the entry together.”
The special council website at www.canterbury.gov.uk/hernebayinbloom will continue to be updated in the coming months with news about the competition. Anyone who wants to get involved in next year’s entry can call Angela Furlong on 01227 862 205.
